That issue settled, Flipper brought the group (minus monks) back to his room at the noodle house and ordered a round of noodles for everyone. "So, Ono, tell us a bit about yourself," he asked. He sat on the bed with his legs crossed, leaning back against the wall.

Meanwhile, downstairs, a piece of fish was making an incredible journey. This particular piece of fish had come from a random and obscure species, washed away from its home demense by a particularly nasty flood, caught by a hapless fisherman, and sold to the Wok in the Park the day after. From there, it was cleaned and filet'd, sat on the counter for another day, tenderized in a chef's armpit, chopped up with some equally mistreated chicken, and fried in a wok immediately after someone's masala. The fish was then joined by some "secret" spices, cabbage, assorted colorful mushrooms, lo mein and this sentence's Oxford comma. A waitress hastily grabbed the finished steaming-hot plate and brought it out to the restaurant.

"Ono's kinda a nickname, but I don't have any other names, so I guess it's my real name then. So...uh..." Ono scratched his head, apparently deep in thought about Flipper's simple question. "Uh, well, I guess I'm pretty good at yeddim drovin' and packing cargo. I even have my own yeddim," he said proudly. "I work for the Guild, movin' stuff and keepin' the yeddim happy, but what I really like is telling people all about the Sun. He doesn't care what Pole you're from; red, green, blue, black, and white, they're all precious in his sight."

The fish's odyssey ended with a knock at Flipper's door, where it arrived as a wrong order. Flipper opened the door, accepted the tray containing whatever had been ordered, and secured the door again.


"Okay, that's nice," Flipper replied, not having gotten the answer he was after. "I'm from the West pole myself, saw a lot of the guy there. Got a truly impressive tan out of it, too, but that's not important right now. You did something in the magistrate's office. You didn't just convince her that you should get a permit; you wrapped her mind around your little finger and got whatever you wanted." He demonstrated what he meant by twirling a few noodles around his chopsticks and taking a bite.

"There was more at work there besides just people skills, I suspect. What I really want to know is who you are that you could pull that off."

"I dunno really, but it's a lot easier to talk to people about the Sun ever since he came and told me how special I was. Not that everyone isn't special, but he said he had plans for me. Now people like to listen to me, even if I'm a little slow sometimes."

Flipper nodded. That was it. He was hoping that was what the guy was, else the alternative mightn't have been good. If this guy wasn't so innocent (and slow on the uptake), Flipper would have been genuinely frightened by Ono's potential as a pure mind-rape machine. As it was, he obviously wasn't to be trifled with.

"So how long ago was that - when he told you he had plans, I mean. Sounds like an interesting story."

Dang, those noodles were oddly good today. Flipper was something of a greasy spoon connoisseur, but these beat out anything else he'd had in quite a while.

Ono stared at the ceiling, slowly counting to himself. "'Bout four years ago. I was just mindin' some guild yeddim outside the Lap when I saw the light."

Given what Flipper knew of exaltation, or at least what he'd been told of it, Ono didn't seem to be telling the whole story, but that was fine for now. Flipper had a slightly less vague idea of what he was dealing with.

"Indeed. It's actually kind of a funny coincidence. I've heard a thing or two from the moon myself, you see."

Obsidian starts thinking to himself about his brief time as a solar, and wonders if Ono knows of any way to change him back. he pulls Pell outside and mentions this to him.
